Companionway doors take their name from the companionway of a sailboat, which is the access to a sailboat’s cabin space. Until recently sailboat cabins were accessed via the companionway hatch, a small opening usually secured by a hatch door or hatch boards. Hatch boards are a time-honored method of securing a cabin, but are awkward to work with, especially in regards to frequent passenger traffic and the moving of luggage or other sizable gear. Companionway doors are removable double doors crafted from waterproof material that are specifically designed to substitute companionway hatch boards and ease transitions between a sailboat’s cabin and deck.
